Today, I got an exiting mail from Vodafone. I was shocked to see it. Just have a look in it. Specially, the price . :)
I was expecting near 12K even it is near 8.X K in US. But this is too ****ing price. I am waiting for Airtel.

How Do You Get Rid of the Smell of Burnt Popcorn?

What is the best way to get rid of the smell of burnt microwave popcorn? I burned a bag a week ago but can't get rid of the smell. It has taken over my kitchen, and despite cleaning with water, baking soda, Lysol and Oust, it is still lingering. Any ideas?

Answer:

Good morning Andrea! I love your questions. We've all have had the same problem and now I also know how to get rid of the smell. The only thing I ever cook is popcorn (ask Al). I have two different answers so I suggest you try one of them and let me know what happens.

Solution #1:

Put a paper plate on the bottom of the microwave to contain spills, then pour 1 ½ cups water into a large microwave-safe bowl; add half a chopped lemon, pulp and rind, and four or five whole cloves. Put into microwave and bring to a boil; let stand for 10 – 15 minutes, then remove and leave the door open for several hours or overnite to further air out the oven.

Solution #2:

Fill a large, four cup, microwave-safe bowl with one cup water. Add ¼ cup white household vinegar or 1/3 cup lemon juice and allow this mixture to boil in your microwave for a full five minutes. Do not open the door or move the bowl for 15 minutes, so the water can cool. Remove the bowl and wipe out the microwave. Leave the door open to air the oven out. Open a window or turn on an exhaust fan to help dissipate the smell.

Today @ flip, we had Green Tea at evening tea break .I know its not a BIG deal to have green tea, but here in Kerala, its not common to use Green Tea as in Chaina or Ameria. ;) .
Just for a sake, I asked GooG about the same, and G uncle gave me some informations to me. Here is what I got.

People who drink at least a pint of green tea each day have a lower risk of death, a Japanese study shows.
The lower overall death risk among green tea drinkers appears to be due to a lower risk of death from heart disease. The benefit of green tea is especially pronounced in women, find Shinichi Kuriyama, MD, PhD, Tohoku University School of Public Policy in Sendai, Japan, and colleagues.
Green tea is a very popular drink in Japan. But some people drink more than others do. Women who drink five or more 3.4-ounce cups of green tea every day cut their risk of heart disease by 31% compared with women who drink one or fewer 3.4-ounce cups. Men who drink this much green tea cut their heart disease risk by 22%.
“”Green tea may prolong your life through reducing heart disease and stroke,”" Kuriyama tells WebMD. “”Our findings might explain the differences in mortality profile between Japan and the United States. The Japanese age-adjusted rate of mortality due to (heart disease and stroke) is about 30% lower than that of the United States.”"
The findings appear in the Sept. 13 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.
—Green tea: might Americans benefit?
Kuriyama’s study is based on data collected since 1994 among more than 40,000 healthy Japanese people aged 40 to 79. More than 86% of the study participants remained in the study for 11 years. Participants filled out detailed questionnaires about their daily diets and health.
The study was conducted with meticulous care. But Kuriyama is quick to point out that this kind of study can’t prove green tea has any beneficial effect. Proof comes only from a clinical trial in which some people get green tea and others do not. The Kuriyama study shows only that there is a link between green tea and lower death risk — not that green tea causes lower death risk.
Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, director of the cardiovascular nutrition research program at Tufts University’s Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, is underwhelmed by the Kuriyama study.
“”This is association, not causation,”" Lichtenstein tells WebMD. “”The Japanese are so different from us in terms of diet and lifestyle. The data — at this point — do not support the hypothesis that adding green tea to your diet will significantly reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke. But stay tuned.”"
Kuriyama points to a Dutch study that suggests Westerners may benefit from green tea. That’s also the opinion of green tea researcher Tsung O. Cheng, MD, of George Washington University Medical Center.
“”I would think that the effect of green tea is worldwide,”" Cheng tells WebMD. “”There is no reason why it should be beneficial in the Eastern world and not in the West. I hope that Westerners will begin to drink more green tea, too. A person would drink two or more 8-ounce cups per day for maximum benefit.”"
—More benefits for women?
Why do women seem to get more of a benefit from green tea than men do?
Kuriyama and colleagues note that the men in their study smoked more cigarettes than women did. And smokers, overall, got less of a benefit from green tea than nonsmokers.
But Cheng says it’s related to estrogen. Green tea studies consistently show a greater effect for women than for men, he says. He suggests that green tea’s active ingredients may interact with the female sex hormone estrogen to boost a heart-protective effect.
—Green tea: no effect on cancer
Kuriyama and colleagues found no evidence that green tea protects against cancer death.
Kuriyama says that was a surprise to him, as “”abundant”" evidence from animal and test-tube studies suggests that green tea ingredients fight cancer.
But he notes that the current findings are in line with other, smaller studies that find green tea has no effect on several specific kinds of cancer.

While it’s yet to be proved that green tea really will protect you against early death, there’s a lot of evidence that green tea is safe — with two major exceptions.
Cheng warns that green tea contains vitamin K. Vitamin K affects blood clotting. People taking the blood-thinning drug Coumadin, he says, should not start drinking more green tea.
And Kuriyama warns against drinking your green tea piping hot.
“”Drinking green tea at high temperature may be associated with increased risk of esophageal cancer,”" he says. “”Therefore, I recommend that green tea should be consumed at moderate or low temperature.”"
What’s the bottom line? For Lichtenstein, the message is to go ahead and drink green tea if you like it. But to prevent heart disease and stroke, what really works is a healthy diet and daily exercise.
Neither Kuriyama nor Cheng would disagree with that. But they both recommend green tea, too.
“”I personally drink two to three cups of green tea per day,”" Kuriyama says. “”On the basis of our study results, I would like to recommend the drinking of green tea to my friends and my family because our findings are the best evidence at present.”" Cheng says green tea is much better for you than oolong tea or black tea, which lose some healthy properties during fermentation. But that’s not why he drinks it.
“”I drink two cups a day because I like it,”" Cheng says.

And I have found this funny but tasty thing.

Japan's tea ceremony may be boring, but it's still an auspicious part of Japanese culture. For green tea to have sunk to the level of being stuck in some Western chocolate bar must be a new low, just one step up from sprinkling it on french fries. To be fair though, with all the other flavours popping up, this just wouldn't be Japan without a green tea Kit Kat. However like green tea ice cream, I find adding sugar and milk to green tea totally ruins the flavour. If you've ever had real, high quality, bitter 'macha', you'll know what I mean. Green tea might be an antioxidant, but sweet green tea is an oxymoron, like putting maple syrup on sausages, or eating a cheese and jam sandwich. Some green wavy lines didn't make up for the sickeningly sweet taste and some fake green tea flavour. Next!

A small team gathered to discuss these questions and define the Googley Design Principles:

2. Every millisecond counts.
3. Simplicity is powerful.
4. Engage beginners and attract experts.
5. Dare to innovate.
6. Design for the world.
7. Plan for today's and tomorrow's business.
8. Delight the eye without distracting the mind.

These UX principles flow naturally from the Ten things Google has found to be true and the UX group's stated mission: to design products that satisfy and delight our users. We described the principles as "Our Aspirations" for two reasons:
We have a lot of work to do when it comes to implementation.

In my previous post, I introduced the philosophies behind Google ranking. As part of our effort to discuss search quality, I want to tell you more about the technologies behind our ranking. The core technology in our ranking system comes from the academic field of Information Retrieval (IR). The IR community has studied search for almost 50 years. It uses statistical signals of word salience, like word frequency, to rank pages. (See "Modern Information Retrieval: A Brief Overview" for a quick overview of IR technology.) IR gave us a solid foundation, and we have built a tremendous system on top using links, page structure, and many other such innovations.

Search in the last decade has moved from give me what I said to give me what I want. User expectations from search have rightly increased. We work hard to fulfill the expectations of each and every user, and to do that we need to better understand the pages, the queries, and our users. Over the last decade we have pushed the technologies for understanding these three components (of the search process) to completely new dimensions.

When we talk about queries at Google, we use square brackets [ ] to mark the beginning and end of queries (see "How to write queries" by Matt Cutts), a notation I will use throughout this post. (Pages and search results change frequently, so in time, some examples used here may not behave as explained.)

Activating Microsoft Office 2007 Beta

A lot of people have been experiencing problems in activating their Office 2007 Beta 2. We can run office 2007 only 50times without activation. So i tried to activate my beta. But all the time i got an error message that there is some problem in my network connection, check my connection or try after some time. I tried it so many times. But all the time i got the same message. Then i googled for the solution or activation crack. I didn't get any solution but found that lots of users failed to activate their beta. I didn't get any activation crack. So I thought cracks will be available within 2 or 3 week. Wait for that.

But today i got a solution. There are some product keys that do not need any activation. Install your office with those keys.

One such key is : RQCRJ-FCTYM-V3PDF-GRD46-9YHXQ

If you install your office with this key it will not prompt you for activation.

Don't worry if you are already installed with another key. You can uninstall and then reinstall the beta version by using the new product license key ( RQCRJ-FCTYM-V3PDF-GRD46-9YHXQ ) Or you can use the following method to change your product key by modify the registry without uninstalling the beta version.

1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.

2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

3. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration Note you may also find another subkey that resembles the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{30120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

4. If you find additional subkeys that reference Microsoft 12.0 registration, open each subkey, and then identify the product by the ProductName entry. For example: ProductName=Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007

5. When you find the subkey for the product from which you want to remove the existing product license key, delete the following entries:

· DigitalProductID

· ProductID

6. Exit Registry Editor.

The next time that you try to run an Office application, you will be prompted for a new product license key. Then, you can enter the product license key that is mentioned here.

1.He has more bandwidth at his disposal than your corporate office

2.He calls his computer by a name.

3.He does his homework on computer and if you turn on his computer you dont have any idea wtf is going on.

4.His room is so messed up that his computer responds to ping but you cannot find it there.

5.He is never short of money, and when he talks to her gf for hours you dont see that in the bill.

6.you find some weird wires and junk hardware in his room which seems good for nothing but still he has it.

7.He sleeps during the day and you can see the monitor light at night.

8.You see posters of sci-fi movies in his room along with pamela anderson.

9.If you enter in his room in dark you will see so many small lights(some of them blinking) of all colors/sizes/brightness.

10.He thinks that injections are something malicious we put in query strings.

11.He uses terms condoms and proxies synonymously.

20 things you didn't know about Windows XP

You've read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational
changes. Now it's time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's secrets.
1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy
about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the
Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option,
and then type 'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the
uptime. If you want to keep these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called
info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).
2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first.
Go to the Start menu, select Run... and type 'gpedit.msc'; then select User Configuration,
Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do
not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will
reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- some may stop your
computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).
3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut
on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe
user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like.
That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy
enough, Windows key + L will do the same.
4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows
Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit,
edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can
then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove
Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.
5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new
commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching
system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and
'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by
/? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.
6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more
than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install'
into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the
command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't
bother.
7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using
'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by
typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.
8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you've got a fast machine. On
slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing 'regsvr32 /u
zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back
as they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.
9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology -- but doesn't
have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS
and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To
enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects,
select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best
results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as
well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control
Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.
10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who's using network address
translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a
Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a
NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum's real IP address -- they
can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com -- and get them to make sure that
they've got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.
11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again.
Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to
use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have
administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can
have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users,
but this can have unforeseen effects.
12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a
Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but
if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with
a value of 0.
13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run...
from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the user accounts
application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And
Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box
will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.
14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to.
Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and Advanced, go down to the
Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser
is closed.
15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can't see the LEDs
twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then
select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection,
select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box.
You'll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely
during network traffic.
16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things
along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control
Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like
0.
17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in
a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to
that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you
can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.
18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if
it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't,
or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in
the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will
pick it up and display it.
19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key +
D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

McAfee Total Protection 2007

McAfee has launched its new computer protection suite, which should already be on the retail shelves. The suite has followed the industry trend of including multiple programs to individually address the online threats that consumers face. In addition to virus scanning, Total Protection 2007 includes a spyware blocker, an anti-rootkit tool, an Internet filter that analyses images and text, an anti-phishing feature and incremental backup functionality.

New to the suite is support for Firefox as well as Internet Explorer, in the form of a safety rating system called Site Advisor. This adds safety ratings to web sites in the form of green ticks or red crosses based on testing and reports from McAfee and the hackerwatch.org community.

The download manager has evolved into a standalone application, and no longer relies on ActiveX. It updates all the components of the suite, which are integrated from within the UI. This has been refreshed to reflect the tighter cross-program links.

To address the increasing numbers of computers in home networks, the package is available in a multiple user license pack. The single user version retails for $129.95 and the three user version retails for $159.95. Both packages provide updates for one year, after which the services will still work, but definitions will not be updated.

Total Protection 2007 is not Vista compatible, as Microsoft is still holding the details of the operating system close to its chest. According to current projections, it is unlikely that this will affect users as the one year license will cover the interim between installation and Vista's release.

Install Vista from a USB Flash Drive

With all the Windows Vista buzz flying around on the internet, I asked myself how could USB fit into this, besides the Readyboost power-up feature Vista provides. I found this forum post, via EverythingUSB, and wanted to share it with my USB clan. So here it goes:

Why install Windows Vista from a USB flash drive?

As any tech savvy would answer: Performance. Installing Windows Vista from a high speed USB flash drive is, most likely, the easiest & fastest way to complete a Windows Vista install. This is much faster than using a DVD, gigabit Ethernet, or external USB hard drives because the differences in access speed & transfer rates.

Play-by-play guide to installing Vista from a USB flash drive:

1. Acquire an ultra-fast USB 2.0 flash drive (need one )
2. Format the ultra-fast flash drive

Run CMD.EXE and type the following. WARNING: This set of commands assumes that the USB flash drive is addressed as "disk 1″. you should double check that by doing a list of the disks (type "list disk") before cleaning it. If you have multiple hard drives, like an SDFlash drive or a Multibay drive, you could end up wiping your second drive using this command.

1. diskpart
2. select disk 1
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

3. Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

Simply issue the following command to start copying all the content from the Windows Vista DVD to your newly formatted high speed flash drive.

* xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\

And that's it. Boot up the machine, have it boot off the USB drive, and watch how fast the installation completes. If you thought Windows Vista installed quickly before (usually 20-25 minutes per install of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition) then let's see how you like having Windows Vista install in less than 5-10 minutes. The slowest part of the install will probably be the computer waiting for you to type in information in the setup fields, and even that can be automated using the Windows Automated Installation Kit.

(Oh yeah… and for you server jockeys: Windows Server Longhorn will be installable in the same way. Gone are the days of waiting more than an hour just to get the OS up and running!)

How can I install Windows Vista without supplying the product key?

Well, you can, sort of.

You can configure Windows Vista to install without having to manually enter the product key during the setup process. This is quite useful if you find yourself in need to perform an installation of the OS but without having the (legal) product key with you at that very moment. Unlike previous Windows versions where you had to have a CD Key handy during the installation of the OS, the Windows Vista setup process only makes it appear as if you have to enter a product key to install it.

During the setup program's progress you will reach a dialog box that will ask you to enter a valid product key. Here is where the fun part starts. You can actually leave it blank!

Next click No in response to the "Are you sure" dialog box. You will now be presented with a list of all the different Windows Vista versions available on the DVD. Yes, the cool thing about the Windows Vista DVD is that every DVD has every version of Vista available for you to pick from, and the product key you own is the only thing that tells the setup process what version of Vista it should install.

You can now pick any one from that list and use it for up to 14 days without any having any issues. After 14 days you will need to enter a valid product key or do a fresh install from the beginning.

This "feature" will in fact help you if you'd like to test the different versions of Vista before deciding which one to buy.

Locking down USB devices in Vista

If you want to prevent users from connecting USB key drives to their machines and copying sensitive company information onto them, you can always pour glue in the USB ports on these machines, but that's a drastic measure. But if you're upgrading your desktops to Vista, you can use Group Policy to do this instead. Start by enabling the following policy setting: Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ System \ Device Installation \ Device Install Restrictions \ Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy setting. This prevents the user from installing any new devices of any type. Now configure the other policy settings under the same node to enable which types of devices you want to allow users to be able to install on their machines.

Design goals and approach
In previous releases of Microsoft Office applications, people used a system of menus, toolbars, task panes, and dialog boxes to get their work done. This system worked well when the applications had a limited number of commands. Now that the programs do so much more, the menus and toolbars system does not work as well. Too many program features are too hard for many users to find. For this reason, the overriding design goal for the new user interface is to make it easier for people to find and use the full range of features these applications provide. In addition, we wanted to preserve an uncluttered workspace that reduces distraction for users so they can spend more time and energy focused on their work. With these goals in mind, we developed a results-oriented approach that makes it much easier to produce great results using the 2007 Microsoft Office applications.
Key features
While the overall look of the redesigned applications is new, early testing indicates that people quickly feel at home in the new user interface and rapidly become accustomed to the new way these applications work. The ease with which people use the new interface is due to the simplicity of the new interface features:
The Ribbon
The traditional menus and toolbars have been replaced by the Ribbon — a new device that presents commands organized into a set of tabs. The tabs on the Ribbon display the commands that are most relevant for each of the task areas in the applications. For example, in Office Word 2007, the tabs group commands for activities such as inserting objects like pictures and tables, doing page layout, working with references, doing mailings, and reviewing. The Home tab provides easy access to the most frequently used commands. Office Excel 2007 has a similar set of tabs that make sense for spreadsheet work including tabs for working with formulas, managing data, and reviewing. These tabs simplify accessing application features because they organize the commands in a way that corresponds directly to the tasks people perform in these applications.

Many of the most valuable features in previous versions of Microsoft Office were not about the do*****ent authoring experience at all. Instead, they were about all the things you can do with a do*****ent: share it, protect it, print it, publish it, and send it. In spite of that, previous releases of the Microsoft Office applications lacked a single central location where a user can see all of these capabilities in one place. File-level features were mixed in with authoring features.
The new UI brings together the capabilities of the Microsoft Office system into a single entry point in the UI: the Microsoft Office Button. This offers two major advantages. First, it helps users find these valuable features. Second, it simplifies the core authoring scenarios by allowing the Ribbon to focus on creating great do*****ents.

Contextual tabs
Certain sets of commands are only relevant when objects of a particular type are being edited. For example, the commands for editing a chart are not relevant until a chart appears in a spreadsheet and the user is focusing on modifying it. In current versions of Microsoft Office applications, these commands can be difficult to find. In Office Excel 2007, clicking on a chart causes a contextual tab to appear with commands used for chart editing. Contextual tabs only appear when they are needed and make it much easier to find and use the commands needed for the operation at hand.

Contextual tabs bring needed functionality to the user's attention at the most appropriate time.
Galleries
Galleries are at the heart of the redesigned applications. Galleries provide users with a set of clear results to choose from when working on their do*****ent, spreadsheet, presentation, or Access database. By presenting a simple set of potential results, rather than a complex dialog box with numerous options, Galleries simplify the process of producing professional looking work. The traditional dialog box interfaces are still available for those wishing a greater degree of control over the result of the operation.

Galleries simplify many operations by presenting a set of results that users can simply "pick and click" to achieve the desired results.

The goal of the new Microsoft Office user interface is to make it easier for people to use Microsoft Office applications to deliver better results faster. But no more! Anyone can now get a Gmail account. Just go to Gmail.com and click the "Sign up for Gmail" link.

But it's more than just Web-based email. Creating a Gmail account opens the door to many other Google-related applications and services. By creating a Gmail account, you will gain access to personalize other Google-based applications including Google Maps, Google News, Picasa 2, Google Pages, Google Reader, Google Docs & Spreadsheets, and lots of other goodies.

You can remove the boot logo that appears when you start Windows XP. This little tweak probably shaves only a few seconds off your boot time but seconds count if you are serious about trying to get Windows XP up and running as quickly as possible. The only negative is that if you remove the boot logo, you will also not see any boot messages, such as check disk. (But if you are not having problems with your computer, this isn't such a big deal.)
To remove the boot logo, follow these steps:
1. Select Start/Run, type msconfig, and click OK.
2. In the System Configuration Utility, click the BOOT.INI tab.
3. On the BOOT.INI tab, click the NOGUIBOOT check box option. Click OK.

Not thrilled about spending a bundle on Vista–and dealing with potential bugs and hardware upgrades? Stick with XP, and use these tools to emulate the Vista experience.

The Hassle: I'm trying to resist moving to Vista. How can I make XP perform like the new Windows OS?

The Fix(es): You can be a holdout (like me) and use a few XP-based freebies that do a surprisingly good job of emulating some of Vista's fancy graphical features. The first three apps listed below are my favorites. You can find all of the free tools and more online at "Add Vista Features to XP."

Copernic Desktop Search: Vista's search is fast and smart–and so is Copernic's, with keyword, file content, Boolean, and wildcard searches. If you don't like the look and feel of Copernic, Google Desktop makes a good substitute.

Desktop Sidebar: Vista has a handy Windows sidebar with calendars, calculators, a quick link to your media player, and RSS feeds. Desktop Sidebar offers similar features, with zillions of add-ons, including a file browser, a weather summary, news updates, and an e-mail checker. Too complicated for you? Then try the simpler LaunchBar Commander, which lets you create multiple on-screen panels (called docks) for launching various applications and documents.

Vista Start Menu SE: This utility creates a fair imitation of Vista's Start menu, but adds functions that Vista lacks–built-in shortcut keys to frequently used Windows functions such as Reboot, Switch Users, and Hibernate. Another great alternative for organizing apps and files is JetStart Free; it's faster than Vista Start Menu SE, but less fancy. (Choose just one of these tools.)

Visual Task Tips: This clever tool pops up a preview–a miniature image–of the open window in the taskbar. Scroll your mouse wheel up or down on the image to resize it.

Folder Marker: Customize your folder icons and icon backgrounds with Vista icons. Folder Marker is a snap to use, and you can visit Horizon Software to download a bunch of Vista icons. (Choose icons of the Ico file type.)

If you haven't had enough (and I know you haven't), read "Why Wait for Vista?" Scott Dunn's take on tools that give your PC the look of Vista without the annoying underlying operating system.

WindowBlinds 5: One prominent Vista feature you might like is Windows Glass, the semitransparent, colored window edges that Windows Aero has. WindowBlinds 5 provides skins–visual styles and themes–that allow you to change the look and feel of many parts of Windows XP. For example, this $20 program lets you modify toolbar icons, the Start Menu and Start button, menu and dialog borders, and the taskbar and title bar. Get the Vista Plus Version 2 skin at the WinCustomize site.
